Workbench is a cross-platform, open-source, visual tool for database management. While some database architects and administrators like working via command line, others prefer a GUI. Workbench provides a user-friendly GUI in which you can create and maintain databases. Choose the database server you have access to and connect to it. You can set the default collation , such as Latin1 or UTF8. However, it is not mandatory. If you do not define the collation, it automatically uses what is assigned to the server instance.
Click Apply. Workbench lets you revise the SQL script that will be applied to the database. If everything is in order, click Apply once more. Note: Make sure the statements you are about to apply work for your database. Next, the output will inform you that the SQL script was successfully applied to the database.
With this step, you have created a database schema. Close the SQL script and start working on your table. The first item in the expanded menu should be Tables. Double-click Add Table in the Physical Schemas section. This automatically loads the table editor with the default table name table1. Edit the Table Name field to change the table name from table1 to movies. Next, add columns to your table. Double-click a Column Name cell and the first field defaults to moviesid because by default MySQL Workbench appends id to the table name for the initial field.
Add the two additional columns described in the following table. The figure that appears after the table shows all three columns in the movies table. The next figure shows the a new tab titled EER Diagram , which displays diagram representation of the movies table and columns. Note that the EER Diagram is automatically updated to reflect this change. To open the table editor, either change back to the MySQL Model tab and right-click on the movies table, or right-click on movies in the EER diagram and select an Edit 'movies' option.
This tutorial assumes you have created a connection already. If not, see Section 5. Make any necessary connection changes and then click Next. The Options step lists optional advanced options as shown in the figure that follows.
For this tutorial, you can ignore these options and click Next. Select an object to export to the live MySQL server. In this window, you can either use the result grid or open the form editor. For the fastest route to success, use the result grid which is the default. Double-click the first entry in one of your columns and type the data to be added. After entering the necessary data, hit Enter on your keyboard. Double-click under that newly created row and create another. The form editor is just as easy to use; you only need to remember to click the Next Entry button single right-pointing arrow to move to the next data row Figure F , before entering new data.
